Fr. Luan was born in 1963 in the middle of the Vietnam War, in Saigon. After a tumultuous time there, he came to Portland thanks to Catholic Charities in 1980. He converted to Catholicism and was baptized and confirmed at the Vietnamese parish on NE Sandy while in high school. Fr. Luan attended Portland State University majoring in Electrical Engineering. Graduating in 1987, he began to work as an intern for the Corps of Engineers. Having discerned a possible vocation to the priesthood, he applied and was accepted by the Archdiocese of Portland in 1988. Father Abbot Nathan (former pastor here at St. Agatha) was the formation director during his time in seminary. His first assignment was associate pastor at St. Mary's in Corvallis.He was reassigned to Cathedral in 1995 as an associate pastor. After 4 years, he was appointed Pastor of Nativity of the BVM in Rainier in 1999. Three years later, Archbishop Vlazny sent him to St Frederic in St. Helens in 2002. In 2010 he came to St. Birgitta. He has been at St. Agatha’s since 2018.
